The journey

Woven Through Indigenous Women’s Leadership

CEDAW’s General Recommendation No. 39 (GR39) is the result of a long collective process led by Indigenous Women from the seven sociocultural regions, together with their organizations, networks and alliances, both from their territories and from within international human rights spaces.

A Shared Journey…

GR39 recognizes the collective work of Indigenous Women’s organizations, regional networks, feminist allies, human rights institutions and United Nations mechanisms that contributed to this historic achievement.

This timeline brings together key moments of advocacy, consultation, alliance-building and political action identified by FIMI that made GR39 possible. However, these are not the only efforts that contributed to this process. We celebrate the work carried out by many Indigenous Women’s organizations and other actors to achieve this important milestone, even when their contributions are not explicitly reflected in this timeline.

As a result of Indigenous Women’s advocacy within the United Nations system, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues recommends that the CEDAW Committee pay specific attention to issues affecting Indigenous Women.
